7/17/2008: Orwell? What an amateur...Posted by James Pederson at 1:55 pm. Well, I usually stay away from politics on this blog, but I'll make an exception today considering the extenuating circumstances we've
continually seen in recent times. Now I'm no constitutional law scholar or professor, or even student, but what I do know is that when one gets a subpoena, it is normally ill-advised to ignore it. Ill-advised of course being a very prominent euphemism in this case considering the almost 100% assured contempt of court if not . At this point, most people will know that I’m talking about Karl Rove, but incase you aren’t aware, Rove has most recently spat in the face of a congressional subpoena requiring him to testify under oath. Instead he skipped the country and showed absolutely no regard for the laws of our country much less the legal ramifications of not showing up. Now I'm no constitutional law scholar or professor, or even student, but what I do know is that when one gets a subpoena, it is normally ill-advised to ignore it. Ill-advised of course being a very prominent euphemism in this case considering the almost 100% assured contempt of court if not jail. The claim that he makes in his defense is that he is protected under executive privilege. Despite the utter ridiculousness of the argument that information he has about the firing of U.S. Attorneys based on political affiliation, he continues to tell the American people to their face that he isn’t required to testify, instead offering to come ‘visit’ congress and answer questions with one well-versed caveat; yes, painful motif of barring transcripts and refusing to be under oath. You may remember that when Bush was called to testify about the happenings of 9/11, he too refused transcripts, recording devices, and also being under oath. What could possibly be so sensitive about either of these situations that the American people don’t deserve to hear or read about your responses to questions that were we in a more influential position would be forcibly garnered from you if necessary. Yep, so he skipped the hearings and what’s more? Wait, you mean congress still hasn’t leveraged him with contempt of court? You don’t say… As I said in the beginning of this post, I usually stay away from politics. This is not about politics, or left, or right, or middle. It’s about our lives, our rights, and our future. If we set a precedent of not expecting people to be held accountable for their actions, we condemn our country and the standards that once held so much importance.
