Infinity Martial Arts is business that teaches martial arts in Middleton, WI. The schools owner, Mike Welch, needed a website on which to provide class schedules, program information, media, and a simple means of contact. The website also needed to be expandable for later modification and implementation of a back-end area where students would be able to log in and access curriculums, books, etc. The back-end will likely have another feature set for the parents of students, allowing them to access information specific to their child.

The website was built all in PHP with a design created in Adobe Photoshop.

Update: Recently, Mike returned for a redesign and implementation of video on the site. With the new design came an installation of WordPress.

I customized categories to create CMS functionality, and the installation enabled them to have a blog where they can post news about the school and upcoming events.

With WordPress, the site became very easily editable, and thanks to how simple the template system is in WordPress, updating the design elements of the site will be very easy. WordPress plugins were used to limit items in category lists, change the login page, and customize the display of the sidebar. Launching the blog will assist in creating some interactivity on the site, where students can come to ask questions of instructors and talk to each other.

Lot 74 plays alternative & punk rock in Madison, WI. For their website, they needed a basic structure including bio pages, media pages, and a contact from for any visitor to email them directly through a form.

The site was rolled out in 2006 in PHP with a custom menu for each page designed in Adobe Photoshop. About 8 months later, the band came back for more, changing the layout and branding and adding pages to allow for the addition and subtraction of band members and refresh the look of the site. That design went over well, and the band was able to add media to the site, sharing their songs and promoting the band, potentially helping to get them gigs.

After another short period, the band wanted another update to their site. This time it was to create and incorporate a new logo for the new changes in band members. This is when we came up with the logo sample seen at the right. To go with the logo, we also enhanced the website, launching the new design in WordPress, enabling the members to edit their own pages and content from anywhere with an internet connection, adding images and media into the site themselves.

Additionally, 3 weeks later they returned wanting to redesign, and since the installation was in WordPress, we just created a new theme, and in a little less than 8 hours the site relaunched with all the same features, but this time with a new face. This version included a WordPress category that they could simply create a photo post in, using custom fields to tell the system where the photo was, and through creating a custom template for the photos section, they site has a category that is just photos, showing thumbnails initially, and then letting people click to see a bigger size, show the photo description and letting people comment on the photos.

The logo is no longer in use on the website, but the layout and content management functionality are still intact and in use.

The most important thing to think about when making a website for a small business is product/service exposure. It needed to have as much product exposure as possible, encouraging potential customers to send e-mails to request quote. Photos of the enclosures were included show customers a preview of what they can expect if they order a box.

The final site was published in PHP/MySQL with a custom layout created in Adobe Photoshop. The site included 3 contact forms to facilitate fast, efficient contact by potential clients.
